SOAR DISCUSSION GUIDE
Abraham’s Family – God’s Purposes Prevail
Ps Philip Kua
Scripture:
- Read Genesis 16:1-15 and Matthew 4:1-11
Observations:
- While we cannot tell how bad they were, what sort of power were being played out in Abraham’s family? What are possible hurts caused to the family members?
- We know that Satan has no way of exercising power over God, but in the Matthew 4 reading, we can see that Satan was trying his best to manipulate and subjugate Jesus under his authority. What areas of Jesus humanity did Satan attack?
- How did Jesus break the power of Satan?
Application:
- What sort of abuses of power have you seen happening in families? How widespread is this problem?
- While this discussion is not necessary about Domestic Violence, briefly discuss, if you agree to statements made in today’s media, that “domestic violence in Australia” has reached a crisis point.
- What can we learn from the way Jesus dealt with Satan in Matthew 4, and hence, how do we as Christians respond to abuse of power in a family?
Response
If your Life Group has watched the movie “War Room”,
- Use that story to discuss how Christians should respond to abuse of power in a family?
Pray:
- Share how the Life Group can pray for you or for a family you know. Pray that the Lord’s salvation, justice and protection will come quickly and also pray for the Lord to work out a gracious, redemptive plan for the family.
This Week – this week Ps Chee will be sharing about the family life of Joseph – ‘Refined Through Personal Hurts’. You can read Genesis 37-50 in preparation for this Sunday’s sermon.
