Walk Your Walls
Ps Chee Fah
7th February 2016
Scripture
Read Nehemiah 2
Observation
- Why does Nehemiah inspect the walls before he goes public with his God given burden?
- What does the walls of Jerusalem represent in the Old Testament? What does the walls of Jerusalem represent about the state of the nation of Israel before God? In what ways does the Bible use the building metaphor in the New Testament?
- God is the divine builder of our lives. What is the role of the Holy Spirit in helping build our life to become more like Christ? Give an example of your experience of the Holy Spirit’s work in the area of self-awareness through the Word of God.
Application
Ps Chee shared three tools that God provides us for growing in our self awareness:
- OUR MIRROR – the Word of God (Heb 4:12)
- OUR FRUIT – the evidence of facts of our lives (Matthew 7:15-20)
- OUR COMMUNITY – invite input and listen to the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:15)
Break into pairs of people who know you well and discuss the following:
- Spend 15 mins reflecting quietly on the ‘fruit’ of your life. Assess the evidence and facts of your life in your three relationships; your relationship with God, relationship with the body of Christ and relationship with those far from Jesus. Write down your observations on a piece of paper. How is your life building towards the mission of God? Share your observations with one another.
- Invite each other to speak the ‘truth in love’ to one another by asking two questions – What is an area of Christ-likeness that I need to grow in? What is an area of Christ-likeness in me that God is using to bless others?
Response
By this time the Holy Spirit would have opened up insights of your own self-awareness. Ps Chee shared that the Cross provides us a lens by which we should evaluate ourselves and our lives. The cross empowers us to see the disasters of sin and at the same time shift from SELF-awareness to CHRIST-awareness.
As you look at those self-realisations, how do you now evaluate it through the Cross of Jesus Christ? Describe what you see to one another through the Cross. Pray for God to continue His divine building work in one another.
Please note: Read Nehemiah 3 in preparation for this coming Sunday
