Joseph’s Family – Refined Through Personal Hurts
Ps Chee Fah

Scripture
Read Genesis  37:1-36 and 39-40
Observation
  • What personal hurts would Joseph have experienced?
  • How could have these hurts shaped his heart and the direction of his life?
  • Joseph lived a God-centred life. What does that mean and how is that reflected in the way he dealt with people and circumstances?
Application
Break into groups of twos or threes:
  • What are some of the personal hurts that you have experienced from your family relationships? Describe them and how you’ve dealt with them.
  • How are those hurts affecting the way you relate to your family and how you are building your future family?
  • Ps Chee shared, “People and situations do not determine our behaviour. They provide the occasion where our behaviour reveals our hearts. Often how we respond to hurts reveal what is ruling our hearts.” Reflect on your hurts. What does that reveal about what is ruling your heart? What does it mean for God to rule your heart in that situation?
Response
Read Genesis 50:14-26. Ps Chee shared, “unless we die to SELF we will forever be victims of people and circumstances and not rise to become instruments in God’s hands for his purpose and His names sake. It’s only when God has His place, then will I have mine in His purpose and plan.”
  • Ask the Lord Jesus what aspect of SELF does He wants us to surrender in your family hurt?
  • Ask the Lord Jesus what does He want you to do so that you can be an instrument in His hand for His purpose in those family relationships?
