Taking Possession

Read Joshua 21

Observation
– Why did the previous generation struggle to take possession of God’s promises?
– When did God give them the promises and when did He fulfil them? How does this impact the way you understand Joshua 21:45?
– What does it mean that the Lord gave and the people of God had to possess? How do we deal with that tension of what God does and what we have to do to possess His promises?
– What did the Lord give them possession of? Was it just land?

Application
Choose one or more of the following questions:
– Some of us have personal testimonies of how God has been faithful and you have taken possession of God’s promises and rest. Encourage one another with those stories.
– Ps Phil shared that each land can represent a spiritual condition for us today: Egypt (life before Christ), the wilderness (the defeated Christian life) and Canaan (the victorious Christian life). Which land are you in at the moment? Why?
– What are some of the things that God wants you to take possession of?
– Are there strongholds of the mind that hinder you from stepping into God’s promised rest (2 Corinthians 10:3-5)? What are they? How have you tried to deal with them?
– Ps Phil share that to take possession requires us to 1) enter the promised land 2) let God fight for you and 3) fight from victory. What does this look like for your situation?
