SOAR DISCUSSION GUIDE

The Consistency of Discipline
Amir Lingam

Scripture
Read Nehemiah 13

Observation
Choose one or more of the following questions:
– Having read the final outcome of the book of Nehemiah, was the rebuilding of the walls a success? Discuss.
– What oaths did God’s people break and why was it significant? How are the breaking of these oaths expressed in our lives as Christians today?
– How did Nehemiah respond to the way God’s people were living?
– The book of Nehemiah ends somewhat abruptly and less of a ‘success’ story. How does this Old Testament book fit in light of the larger God story of the whole Bible?

Application
Choose one or more of the following questions:
– Are there areas in your Christian life that you thought you had progressed but found yourselves taking two steps back? How do you deal with that? Do you try harder, do you give up or do you try to be more consistent?
– Amir shared that ‘Israel’s failure was a failure of worship not duty.’ Reflect on the different areas of your life where you have fallen short in living a life that pleases God. How is that a failure of ‘worship’?
– The discipline of consistency of a discipline is not one of self effort, but a discipline of repentance and faith. What does that mean for your life?

Response
Amir shared that they key disciplines to build a heart for worship to Christ involve:
– seeking to know Jesus Christ more through the Scriptures, inviting revelation from the Holy Spirit.
– developing a responsive heart to God ready to respond in gospel repentance and faith to His revelation
– dedicating your life for the gospel, becoming salt and light to those around you
How do you apply these disciplines to your life?

Note: This weekend is Easter Friday and Sunday. There will be one service at 10am. Please invite your friends and family 🙂
