MOTHER’S DAY

Scripture
Read Exodus 2-3:6 and Hebrews 11:23-29

Observation
Chose one or more of the following questions to discuss:
– The birth of a child is one that is filled with expectations of joy and happiness. However Jochebed (Moses’ mother) gave birth to Moses in circumstances that was hard and unexpected. What would it have been like to be a mother during this time? What kind of anxieties and challenges would Jochebed have faced?
– What did Jochebed do in response to her situation?
– Although Moses grew up in Egyptian culture under a different mother, his initial preschool years was influenced by his mother. On reading the Scriptures above, what were some of the values that would have been instilled in Moses during his ‘weaning years’ with his birth mother? How did that reflect in his decision making in latter years?
– What aspect of the character of God is highlighted in the way Moses recollects his birth story?

Application
Wei shared three insights from Jochebed about how we can respond when our circumstances are much harder than we expected:
– realise that God is the most important person in your journey
– plan your best plan
– entrust your plans to God

1. Describe a time when your circumstances are much harder than you expected. How did you deal with it?
2. Reflecting on that situation, what does it mean for God to be the most important person in your journey? How does that help you respond to your situation?
3. What would it look like for you to plan your best plan and entrust your plans to God in your situation?

Response
Wei shared that one of the best plans we can do is to share our joys and struggles with other people. However often that is difficult because we make comparisons. WE compare our insides with outsides and comparisons creates competition. Sharing creates community.
– in what ways have you compared your insides with others’ outsides? How does that hinder you from journeying with others?
– what practical things can we do as a life group to share from our heart in order to create community?
